The Riverhead Town Board dedicated the future site of the town’s new justice court to the late Judge Allen Smith in a ceremony of tears and laughter on Tuesday.

A portrait of the late Town Justice Allen Smith was unveiled during a ceremony in Riverhead Justice Court yesterday afternoon.

Smith’s family was invited to the town board meeting on Tuesday for a presentation of a grave marker by town historian Georgette Case.

Judge Allen Smith urged town board after town board to replace the cramped, outmoded justice court — which the town has planned to do for more than a decade, but never acted.

Former town supervisor Sean Walter of Wading River has been selected as the Republican, Conservative and Independence Party candidate. He will face Democrat Joseph DiBenedetto, a retired Pace University professor.

Community leader, public servant, mentor — Allen didn't just moan about problems, he tried to fix them.

Riverhead Town Justice Allen Smith was laid to rest yesterday, following two days of drive-through viewing and visitation at Riverhead Fire Department headquarters, where hundreds of mourners came to pay their last respects to a man who devoted his life to bettering his community.

Motorists are asked to avoid Roanoke Avenue and Northville Turnpike Wednesday and Thursday for the drive-by services of Judge Allen M. Smith.

There will be drive-by visitation for Riverhead Town Justice Allen M. Smith at Riverhead Fire Department Headquarters on Wednesday, July 29 and Thursday, July 30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with a firematic service on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
