Hermine

Tropical storm conditions are expected today and tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

Weather forecasters have become fond of the word “meander” in their description of the movements of the post-tropical cyclone Hermine as it dances to its own tune over the Atlantic Ocean.

Most impacts of Hermine are not expected to be felt on Long Island until tomorrow. The forecast calls for winds out of the north-northeast at 30 to 35 mph in the afternoon, with gusts up to 40-45 mph. Storm surges at high tide will cause moderate to major coastal flooding.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has declared a state of emergency for the county, in preparation of Tropical Storm Hermine.

Storm surge and erosion impacts are the biggest local concerns from Hermine, forecasters say. Surge will build to between two and four feet across eastern Long Island Sound and Peconic and Gardiners Bays Sunday and Monday.

Hurricane Hermine, downgraded to a tropical storm, will likely bring heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding and beach erosion to the East End Sunday night through Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Hermine will pass to our south and east this holiday weekend, bringing the potential for heavy rains and strong winds to the East End.
