Catherine Kent of Baiting Hollow, who taught in Riverhead schools for 38 years, is seeking the Democratic nomination for town council.

Former town board candidate Laura Jens-Smith, Democrat of Laurel, last night announced her candidacy for Riverhead town supervisor at an event she hosted at a downtown restaurant. She came out swinging, blasting the incumbent Sean Walter for "false promises" on downtown revitalization, EPCAL redevelopment and fiscal stability.

Riverhead's "Stop the Violence Basketball Tournament" is going on this weekend at the newly resurfaced Horton Avenue basketball courts.

A fundraising barbecue to defray tournament costs and increase the cash prize for the winning team will take place at the American Legion on Sunday, from 1 to 6 p.m.
