The Rev. George Bogan, former senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Riverhead, died April 4, 2011. He was 88 years old.
The Rev. Bogan was born March 25, 1923 in Elizabeth N.J. to Adrian and Mary (Krupey) Bogdaniuk.
In 1942, at age 17, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the occupation forces. He was stationed in the South Pacific, Philippines, Guam, New Guinea and Japan. He served from 1942 to 1946.
He graduated from Shelton College with a Bachelor of Theology degree in 1953 and earned a Master of Arts degree in religious education from New York University in 1969.
The Rev. Bogan served as the senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church from 1963 to 1991. Upon retiring from full-time ministry, he continued in part-time ministry until 2009. His ministries included various preaching commitments as interim pastor for churches without pastors, pastor of visitation at the Wading River Baptist Church and back again to Calvary Baptist Church as associate pastor for the last few years until 2009.
He also served his regional church association as chairman of the ordination committee for more than 20 years.
The Rev. Bogan is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Louise, of East Moriches, their daughter Jayne Van Sant and her husband, the Rev. Jimmie Van Sant of Bloomfield, N.J., and by two grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home, 406 East Main Street, Riverhead on Wednesday, April 6, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. There will be a funeral service at Calvary Baptist Church, 515 Riverleigh Avenue, Riverhead, on Thursday, April 7, 2011. Interment at Calverton National Cemetery.
