How you can help: What and where to donate to help victims

Here’s a summary of the locations in our area that are accepting donations for victims of Sandy. We will post more information as it becomes available.

All Catholic churches throughout the Diocese of Rockville Center are collecting items for victims of Sandy. There is an urgent need for the following items:
• all non-perishable foods
• hand sanitizers
• bottled water
• diapers and baby wipes
• basic toiletries and toilet paper
• warm clothing and blankets
• batteries, can openers, flashlights and towels.

St. Isidore Roman Catholic Church

St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church

Calvary Baptist Church: non-perishables, liquid baby formula, latex gloves, face masks, diapers, blankets, water, toilet paper, etc. Drop off Mon-Fri 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. at 515 Riverleigh Ave., Riverhead, 727-4112

Long Island Council of Churches:  Food ONLY (no clothing): non-perishable and perishable foods.
Drop off at 407 Osborne Ave., Riverhead 727-2210

Church of the Harvest: accepting non-perishable items, toiletries, diapers, etc. They will connect with others (Island Harvest, Salvation Army, etc.) to distribute to those in need. Drop off at 572 Raynor Ave., Riverhead 727-1977

Grace Episcopal Church/St. David’s school: Clothing for all ages, formula, diapers, blankets, pillows, sheets towels, nonperishable foods and bottle water. Items will be distributed by the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. Drop off at the school behind the church at 573 Roanoke Avenue Riverhead 727-3900

Riverhead Fire Department: clothing, especially winter coats, toiletries, blankets, sheets, pillows, cleaning supplies, paper towels, rags, spray bottles, batteries, flashlights, pocket warmers, work gloves, rubber gloves, googles, masks, shovels, buckets, wheelbarrows, bottled water and non-perishable food items. Drop off at firehouse, east entrance, 540 Roanoke Ave., Riverhead, beteen 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., or 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. on the weekend. 631-603-3671 ext 1

Jamesport Fire Department: clothing, toiletries, and non-perishable food items. Drop off at tent outside firehouse, 25 Manor Ln., Jamesport 722-3817

Riverhead Free Library: partnering with the Salvation Army. In addition to the usual items collected during Food for Fines month, the Library will accept donations of blankets, warm clothing, toiletries, and cleaning supplies, as well as nonperishable food items.  The Salvation Army office, located on Osborn Avenue across from the Library, will distribute these items to those who have been impacted by the storm. These donations will be accepted as part of the Food for Fines program.

Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center: The Aquarium is teaming up with Long Island Cares (The Harry Chapin Food Bank) and will act as a donation site for the following bagged items:
• Ready-to-Eat Non-Perishable Food Items (No-cook food items: canned tuna, cereal & granola bars, etc.)
• Personal Care Items (Unused Shampoo, Deodorant, Soap, etc.)
• Clean Blankets
• Clean Coats
• Baby Items (Diapers, Wipes, Liquid Formula)
At this time, Long Island Cares does not need food items other than what’s listed above; and cannot accept any other clothing other than what’s listed. Please drop off your donation at the Aquarium’s main entrance. 

Planet Fitness: clothing, toiletries, and non-perishable food items. Drop off at 116 Kroemer Ave., Riverhead 369-6200

Talmage Farm Agway: accepting donations of food items and pet supplies on behalf of the Suffolk County SPCA. Dog and cat food, blankets, bowls, leashes, kitty litter are all urgently needed. Donors can bring items to Talmage Farm Agway at 1122 Osborn Ave., 727-3100
