The Riverhead Blue Waves defeated the Newfield Woverines 3-2 at home Wednesday, improving their league record to 8-6.

Cody Smith had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to put Riverhead on top. He hit a two-run homer in the fourth to tie it up at 2. Waves pitcher Josh Brewster fanned eight and allowed five hits in seven innings to earn the win.

“We played good defense … and had timely hitting,” said Waves head coach Rob Maccone.

The Waves have four games left in the regular season and need two wins to secure a playoff berth.

“I feel very good about their chances [at making the playoffs],” Maccone said. It’s been six years since the Blue Waves have been in the playoffs, Maccone noted.

The Waves face Newfield again Friday at 4 p.m. at Newfield High School.
