2013 0806 softball playoffs

You might say the first round of the playoffs in the men’s softball league was high- scoring.

No. 3 seeded Revco Electrical knocked No. 2 Suffolk Cement into the loser’s bracket by way of whopping win — 43-24.

The game lasted all 7 innings despite the final result. Even less believable, Suffolk was actually ahead at one point and by a large margin at that.

After Revco jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, Suffolk would fire back with a crooked number, sending 14 batters to the plate, tallying 9 runs.

Rock Swamborn of Suffolk Cement was the highlight of the first inning, bringing in 4 RBIs with a home run and a single.

But Revco fought back, a reoccurring theme in Monday’s game.

They scored 4 runs to cut the lead to two and just when things were getting close, Suffolk again proved why they earned the second seed by scoring 10 runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Swamborn would again hit a home run, this time a three-run shot.

But after Keith Zambinski hit a solo shot, that put Suffolk at 5 home runs, the home run limit, in just the second inning.

In Men’s softball, a team is only allowed 5 round-trippers a game unless the other team has 5 home runs as well, which then allows both one home run each so long as the other team is tied or up by one.

Anyone hitting a home run while it’s not allowed will result in an out, and oh, it did, twice.

Revco cut the lead to two again the following inning and Suffolk was held scoreless in the bottom half of the third. A resilient Revco squad would take the lead in the fourth, 21-19.

And Revco kept the pressure on, adding 11 more runs over the course of the next two innings, making the score 32-20.

Suffolk got two runners on to start the 6th inning when Swamborn hit one deep over the fence while the umpire just watched before making the call: “OUT!”

That was the second out of the inning, an inning in which they scored only two runs.

Revco scored another 11 runs, virtually putting the game away in the top of the 7th inning.

Ronny Wilcoxin, of Suffolk Cement, would hit another long out, disguised as a home run in the 7th inning.

Greg Goodale, of Revco, hit 6-for-7, with 5 singles, one double and 5 RBIs. John Zilnicki went 5-for-6, hitting for the cycle, contributing a total of 8 RBIs. And Chris Doscinski hit 6-for-7 with 4 RBIs.

Suffolk Cement falls to the loser’s bracket and Revco will advance to play against No. 1 seeded Glenwood Village/Eastern Fuels on Wednesday at Stotsky Park. Game time: 7:30 p.m.
