Coming into the men’s softball championship from the loser’s bracket, Glenwood/Eastern Fuels had to take two wins from Revco Electrical to be crowned champions last night at Stotzky Park and they did just that, leaving no doubt as to who is number one.

Revco had previously been unscathed throughout the playoffs, reaching the championship game by beating every opponent handily, most recently defeating Glenwood 19-1.

But Glenwood proved that the loss was just a fluke.

In the first game, Glenwood came out of the gates swinging, jumping out to a 10-0 lead after the fourth inning. But Revco started chipping away at the lead, little by little.

2013 0815 softball 2They scored seven runs in the 4th inning and by the top of the 6th inning the lead was cut down to three runs, making the score 11-8.

Mike Beiber hit a big-time three-run home run in the inning, his second of the game for Glenwood, extending the deficit to 8 runs.

The score was 20-11 before Revco’s final attempt to win the first game. The top of the 7th inning started with 8 straight hits, including a Brian Mcguiness home run. The score read 20-17 before John Zilnicki came up with a chance to tie the game with two runners on base and one out.

The ball was hit hard and deep but didn’t have enough legs to get over the fence, so Zilnicki settled for a sac fly, bringing a runner in to score.

Chris Contino was given the final opportunity to tie the game but he also came up just short on a flyout, marking the end of the first game.

Final score: Glenwood 20 Revco 18

The second game wasn’t even close.

Glenwood mercy-ruled Revco to win the championship in 5 innings by the score of 21-4.

Matt Hansen led the way with 4 out of the 23 Glenwood hits. Roger Turbush, Kevin Curtis, and Eric Boden each had 4 RBIs. Boden hit two home runs in the winning effort.

Both teams hit the ball hard, so what it came down to was making the plays on defense and Revco had difficulties doing so. They made 6 errors in the two games.

Because as we all know, defense wins championships. And errors always prove costly.
