Pearl Dee Philendas, of Calverton, died August 7, 2014 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 72 years old.
Born April 5, 1942 in Brooklyn, she lived in Fresh Meadows, Queens and was a passionate science teacher until retiring in 2004 before permanently moving to Reeves Park.
Philendas was president of the North Fork Breast Health Coalition. She was a dual cancer survivor.
Her life was cut short by a sudden illness, said North Fork Breast Health Coalition vice president Susan Ruffini.
“We are shocked and saddened by the passing of our beloved friend, Pearl, whose untiring dedication to the women on the North Fork made such a difference in so many people’s lives,” Ruffini said. “She will truly be missed. On behalf of the North Fork Breast Health Coalition, I extend our deepest sympathies to Pearl’s family,” she said.
Pearl loved going to Broadway shows, visiting museums and staying on top of technology as well as current events. Being an avid reader, she was always well-informed and enjoyed discussing a wide variety of topics. This curiosity for life combined with her huge heart prompted Pearl to dedicate herself to her career, friends and family. Mostly Pearl will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity. She always put the needs of the many before her own.
Pearl is survived by her husband Christos, her daughter Constance Morazan, son Christopher, grandson Christos Philindas, and sister Corinne Gerber.
