An engine fire charred a delivery van on Gatewood just south of Route 58 shortly before 2 o’clock this.

Former Riverhead fire chief Gio Woodson was first on the scene at the entrance to the Glenwood community off Route 58.

“He used a fire extinguisher and got the fire knocked down pretty good,” First Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks said. But then the flames returned “and started licking the windshield,” Brooks said. Two engines and a couple dozen firefighters responded to the 1:48 p.m. alarm.

The driver of the van, owned by Elite Rim Repair of Plainview, said he had just left Riverhead Collision on a call and was westbound on Route 58 when he smelled smoke coming out of the vehicle’s vents.

The late-model Ford Transit was destroyed in the fire; no one was injured in the incident. The Riverhead fire marshal is investigating.

This was the third vehicle fire in two days, Brooks said. They were all fully involved, he said.
