Wading River Fire Department First Lieutenant Matthew Jakubowsky has been named District 1 Volunteer Firefighter of the Year by Suffolk County Legislator Greg Doroski.
Jakubowsky was honored during a Sept. 16 ceremony at the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium in the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge, where the Suffolk County Legislature recognized one outstanding volunteer firefighter from each of the county’s 18 legislative districts.
Jakubowsky joined the Wading River Fire Department in 2023 and now serves as first lieutenant, helping lead and train firefighters and first responders. Doroski’s office said Jakubowsky has played an important role in rebuilding Station 2 after its closure, helping strengthen the department’s service to the Wading River community.
He has completed extensive training through the Suffolk County Fire Academy, FEMA and other organizations, including Fire Officer I certification and national certification as a hazardous materials technician through the Center for Domestic Preparedness. He has also completed advanced coursework in firefighting, rescue operations and officer development.
The Wading River Fire Department also recognized Jakubowsky this year with the Chief’s Award. He earned 147 points as a High Points Award recipient.
“Matthew represents the very best of our volunteer fire service,” Doroski said in the Sept. 17 announcement. “In just a few short years, he has stepped up as a leader, put in countless hours of training and service, and taken on tremendous responsibility. We have so many dedicated volunteer firefighters serving communities throughout District 1, which makes it especially meaningful to recognize Matthew as our District 1 Volunteer Firefighter of the Year. I am proud to honor him and grateful for all he does for Wading River and our community.”
Outside the fire service, Jakubowsky earned a Bachelor of Science in finance, summa cum laude, and an MBA in finance from St. John’s University, completing his graduate degree with a 4.0 GPA. He works as a revenue analyst in the financial services industry.
Doroski presented Jakubowsky with a proclamation from the Suffolk County Legislature recognizing his leadership, service and commitment to protecting the community.
