Riverhad’s NJROTC unit took second place overall at a regional drill meet hosted Saturday by the Southold-Mattituck-Greenport NJROTC at Mattituck Junior-Senior High School.
The Riverhead unit took home seven trophies in all, Naval Science instructor Lt. Col. Peter McCarthy said.
The unit’s varsity division earned first place honors for personal inspection (team led by Laurence Nash) and academics (team led by Muhammad Fareed).
First-year cadets took first place in academics and second place in drill squad.
In the individual drill competition, Laurence Nash won first place.
A drill competition tests the cadets’ academic knowledge and physical fitness along with their marching skills, McCarthy said.
The first order of business is an academic test based on the Naval Science curriculum. The cadets take the exam in the morning and it is graded while the rest of the competition takes place. McCarthy was proud of the first-place honors in academics earned by both the varsity unit and the first-year cadets.
“We did really well,” he said.
Yesterday’s competition brought more than 350 cadets from 12 schools from New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York to Mattituck.
First place overall went to Passaic County Technical Institute, McCarthy said.
The Southold-Mattituck-Greenport unit, as host of the event, did not compete in yesterday’s meet.
“As a general rule, if you’re hosting it, you don’t take trophies,” the colonel said.
