The sound of gunshots triggered a precautionary lockdown at Phillips Avenue Elementary School this morning.  But the gunfire was from duck hunters in a nearby waterway, according to Southampton Town Police at the scene.

Riverhead Schools Superintendent Nancy Carney, in a phone interview from the school this morning, said a teacher heard gunfire and school officials reported it to police and put the school in lockdown mode as a precaution.

“There was no emergency,” Carney said.

The district was in the process of making a Connect-Ed call to notify parents, Carney said.
