The track and intensity of a coastal low pressure system has the computers that generate weather forecast models on a roller coaster ride this weekend.
Though forecasters late last night seemed certain that a potential Nor’easter was headed out to sea, model runs this afternoon have the storm taking a more westerly turn again, bringing moderate snowfall amounts to the area.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for our area, now predicting snow accumulations of four to seven inches across eastern Suffolk and New London Counties.
“As it’s getting closer, we’re getting a better idea how it will pan out. We’re very confident at this point that eastern Suffolk will see the four to seven inches now in the forecast,” said Carlie Buccola a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.
A mix of light rain and snow will develop early tomorrow afternoon then change to snow late in the afternoon, forecasters say. Snow will continue through Sunday night, tapering off by Monday morning, according to the weather service.
Travel will be hazardous due to reduced visibilities and significant snow accumulations, according to a winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service at 3:10 p.m.
