Riverhead firefighters battled a fire on Raynor Avenue tonight.

There was an active fire in a second-floor apartment when firefighters arrived on scene at about 7: 15 p.m., First Assistant Chief Peter Jackman said.

The fire appeared to have started on the stove in the upstairs kitchen, he said. The Riverhead Town fire marshal is investigating.

Riverhead Town Police had the residents in the house evacuated before the fire department arrived, Jackman said. No one was injured in the incident.

Riverhead Fire Department responded with about 40 firefighters, a ladder truck and three engines.

Flanders Fire Department was called to stand by at Riverhead’s headquarters while RFD fought the fire.

Firefighters were at the scene until 8:32 p.m.
