A winter weather advisory has been extended to 11 a.m. for snow and freezing rain this morning.
An area of moderate snow will work its way northeast over the New York City metro area and across Long Island early this morning, the National Weather Service said in a special weather statement. Visibilities are expected to drop to to a half-mile with snowfall rates of 1/2 to 1 inch per hour.
Snow accumulations will total 2 to 4 inches, according to the weather service. Ice could accumulate to a trace across south coastal areas and up to a tenth of an inch of ice across the NYC metro area and northwestern portions of Long Island, the weather service said.
Snow will change to freezing rain by mid-morning before changing to rain by late morning.
Hazardous travel conditions are expected.
