Winter Weather Advisory

Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are now forecast this afternoon, with 6 to 9 inches possible across eastern portions of the twin forks.

The first snowfall of the season is in the forecast Saturday night through Sunday morning, with 2 to 4 inches of snow expected in the local area, according to the National Weather Service. 

Snow is expected across Long Island tonight, with total accumulations of around 3 inches in the forecast, the National Weather Service said this afternoon. A winter weather advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. today through 7 a.m. tomorrow.

Total snow accumulations between 3 and 5 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts up to 6 inches possible. Leer in español

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 o’clock this morning, as snow that started overnight continues to blanket the region in white.  Accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected, according to the National Weather Service.

Riverhead Highway Department crews have been out all night spreading salt and sand on local roads, which Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski reports are in “good shape” this morning.There are no delayed school openings this morning.

(Updated Tuesday, Feb. 28 5:30 a.m.) Plow trucks will be called into service for the first plowable snowfall of the season, with the arrival of a winter storm system expected to drop 3 to 5 inches of wet snow across the local area tonight into midday tomorrow.

A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain this morning is creating hazardous travel conditions across Long Island.

A winter weather advisory is in effect this morning for freezing rain and ice accumulations of a light glaze, the National Weather Service said.
