A dispute between two residents of a downtown Riverhead sober house last night turned violent, with one man stabbing another in the stomach, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release this morning.
Riverhead Town Police were called to the residence at 332 East Second Street at 9:29 p.m. on the report of a stabbing.
Responding officers found a 45-year-old man outside the residence bleeding from an abdominal stab wound, according to a police press release issued this morning.
Officers located the victim’s assailant inside the residence, which police described in the press release as a sober house.
Philip S. Maletta, 51, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony, police said.
The victim, George R. Demetriades, 45, was transported by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of the stab wound.
Maletta was held for morning arraignment, police said.
Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
