Two firefighters were taken to the hospital after battling a fire on Kirby Lane in Jamesport last night.

The fire began on a kitchen stove and expanded up the kitchen walls and vents into the attic of the home, Jamesport Fire Department Chief John Andrejack said.

The response to the scene was “very quick” because Jamesport firefighters were at the firehouse preparing for the department’s annual parade and carnival this week, Andrejack said. The call came in shortly after 8 p.m. and firefighters raced to the scene located on a narrow, private road south of Peconic Bay Boulevard and east of the town beach.

Mattituck Fire Department responded to the scene to assist Jamesport, the chief said. Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene. Riverhead Fire Department responded to Jamesport’s headquarters to stand by.

Two Jamesport firefighters were transported by RVAC to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of heat exhaustion, Andrejack said. They were treated and released. No other injuries were reported.
