The first monument at Calverton National Cemetery honoring women in military service, past and present, will be unveiled and dedicated during ceremonies there Oct. 13.
The ceremony will include remarks by public officials and private citizens who collaborated on the concept, design and production of the memorial paying tribute to military servicewomen. It will also include a musical performance by the West Point Band, a photo exhibit by veterans and refreshments.
The ceremony unveiling the monument “Women Serve” will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
Women have served the American military since the Revolutionary War, serving in various support capacities. The first American women enlisted into the regular armed forces were 13,000 women admitted into active duty in the Navy and Marines during World War I. The Woman’s Army Auxiliary Corps was established in 1942. It became an official part of the regular Army the following year, with the passage of a law removing “auxiliary” from the name. Some 350,000 American women served during World War II and 16 were killed in action. Today, women serve in all branches of the military, including in combat roles and in special forces.
The upcoming event in Calverton is sponsored by the American Legion, NYC Veterans and Dignity Memorial.
