October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Typically domestic abuse is often thought of as physical violence against women but that is not always the case.
The Riverhead Free Library, in conjunction with The Retreat, will be holding a free informational meeting on Nov. 1 from 1 to 2 p.m. about domestic violence. Discussion of domestic abuse at this forum will explain how abuse often leaves no outward signs — no black eyes or bruises — as abuse may take the form of verbal, emotional or psychological abuse as well as physical abuse. Attendees will learn that domestic abuse happens to men as well as women.
Personnel from the Retreat including senior counselor Linda Lattanzio, advocacy director Pam Greinke, prevention education director Helen Atkinson-Barnes and the senior director of NYS police campus assault victims unit Kim Bryson will share their expertise with straight talk about how to recognize signs of violence and other types of abuse and what you can do to help.
The Retreat has been a safe haven for families in crisis. It supports children and adult victims of domestic violence and offers community education about this important issue. Click here for more information about the Retreat.
