Temple Israel in Riverhead will hold a memorial to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht on Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the synagogue. The evening will begin with a Shabbat and memorial service followed by dinner and a talk.
Kristallnacht was a two-day event that took place over Nov. 9 and 10, 1938 during which Nazis destroyed synagogues, Jewish homes, schools and businesses and killed nearly 100 Jews. Because the destruction included smashing storefront and shop windows, it is also known as the Night of Broken Glass.
Professor Emeritus Ron Hollander, who directed Jewish American Studies, taught the Holocaust and journalism for 26 years at Montclair State University in New Jersey where his scholarly focus was American press coverage of the Holocaust from 1933-1945. Prior to his teaching career, he was a journalist for 28 years, including reporting from concentration and death camps across Europe. He was the lead author of the anthology, “Why Didn’t the Press Shout? “(Yeshiva University Press). A Fulbright scholar in China for two years, he has presented some 50 academic papers and lectures on the Holocaust. In the past year, he lectured twice at Stony Brook University, at North Shore Jewish Center, and his essay, “America’s Press Reports the Holocaust,” appeared in PRISM, the Holocaust journal of Yeshiva University.
