Aiming to foster a constructive dialogue about race and racism, the Riverhead Anti-Bias Task Force is co-hosting a forum next month with Erase Racism, a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting racial equality.
The forum, “How Do We Build a Just Long Island?,” will bring together people from diverse communities for conversations to help understand our differences and recognize our similarities for the greater good of Riverhead and all of Long Island, the ABTF said in a press release.
The forum will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Riverhead Senior Center on Shade Tree Lane in Riverhead. Admission is free and a light dinner will be served, but registration is required, as space is limited. Register here.
“Long Island is one of the most racially segregated regions in the country. Isolation from one another has created fear and divisions. We need your voice in a courageous conversation that moves us forward. If you want a more inclusive Long Island, let’s work together to create change,” Erase Racism said.
In addition to exploring the history of race and structural racism the forums also intend to increase understanding of why conversations about race are often so difficult and how layers of privilege, dominant cultural norms and defenses operate to maintain the status quo, according to Erase Racism.
One goal of the forum is to help people feel more equipped and inspired to engage in constructive dialogue for change in their homes, communities and regions, the group says on its website.
“Erase Racism is an excellent group. We’re hoping to have a good turnout for this important event,” said Riverhead Anti-Bias Task Force chairperson Connie Lassandro.
