The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Riverhead High School (700 Harrison Avenue, Riverhead) for residents who live in flood-prone areas that will be affected by Hurricane Henri, Riverhead Police announced this evening.
The National Hurricane Center’s latest bulletin, issued at 8 p.m., said the forecast track of the storm currently has its center potentially making landfall on the East End near Amagansett.
At 8 p.m., the center of Hurricane Henri was located off the Delaware coast. Henri is moving toward the north-northeast near 18 mph and it expected to continue in that direction and speed through the night. A decrease in forward speed and a turn toward the north-northwest is expected on Sunday.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles. Hurricane conditions are expected to begin late tonight or Sunday in portions of Long Island, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Tropical storm conditions will begin in these areas tonight.
Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast through tonight. Although some weakening is expected prior to landfall on Sunday, Henri is forecast to be at or near hurricane strength when it reaches the coasts of Long Island and southern New England.
A hurricane warning and a storm surge warning remain in effect for eastern Long Island. A state of emergency has been declared in Suffolk County.
