A Coram man was arrested on charges of attempted robbery and petit larceny last night in Wading River.

Riverhead Police said John M. Marchese, 30, entered the Speedway Gas store at 6305 Route 25A last night at about 8:15, demanded cash from an employee and then removed an item from the store without paying for it.

An investigation by Riverhead Police detectives assisted by a N.Y. State Police K9 unit located the suspect a short distance away from the gas station, Riverhead Police said in a press release.

Marchese was charged with Attempted Robbery in the Third Degree, a Class E Felony, and Petit Larceny, a Class A Misdemeanor. Marchese was processed and released on an appearance ticket for future court action.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
