Updated: 8:20 a.m.: Sound Avenue has been reopened to traffic in both directions after the disabled highway department vehicle blocking the roadway was removed. A highway truck towed the vehicle out of the way, Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said.

Original story:

(Updated 7:58 a.m.) Sound Avenue is closed to traffic in both directions between Church Lane and Herricks Lane due to a disabled Riverhead Highway Department vehicle on Sound Avenue near Van de Wetering Greenhouses that is completely blocking the roadway, according to police radio reports.

Police are diverting westbound traffic south onto Herricks Lane and eastbound traffic south on Church Lane.

A snow blower vehicle being operated by Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski got a flat tire and became disabled in the middle of the roadway, Zaleski said in a phone interview from the scene this morning.

A highway truck was on its way, Zaleski said.

“They’ll have me out and cleared within the hour, he said.

All east-west traffic should use Main Road/NY25 to avoid the shutdown.
