A pedestrian struck by a vehicle on West Main Street Wednesday evening and was was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. west of Griffing Avenue in front of Griffing Hardware, according to radio reports. The driver of the involved vehicle stayed at the scene.

The victim, a 47-year-old man, was struck on West Main Street, west of Griffing Avenue, according to radio reports. He was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps and taken to the county center in Riverside, for transfer to a Suffolk County Police helicopter, an ambulance spokesperson said. He was transported to Stony Brook with serious injuries, according to the spokesperson.

Riverhead Police closed Main Street to traffic between Griffing and Osborn avenues. The road remained closed while Riverhead Police detectives and State Police investigated.

Riverhead Fire Department responded to secure a landing zone for the Suffolk Police helicopter at the county center.
