A fire at the Indian Island county golf course last night damaged the golf cart storage building there and destroyed most of the golf carts stored within the building.

A 911 call reported the fire at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday. First Assistant Chief JR Renten found smoke and flames coming out of west end of the building, according to a Riverhead Fire Department spokesperson.

The first arriving units made a quick stop of the fire, but most of the golf carts inside were destroyed, said Riverhead Fire Chief Joe Hartmann.

“We responded with three engines, two ladder trucks, a tanker and fire police,” Hartmann said. Flanders Fire Department also responded with a tanker, he said. PSEG was also on scene to cut off power to the building, he said. About 50 firefighters answered the call.

The Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating, Hartmann said.
