A Riverhead man was arrested on a felony assault charge following a fight with a family member on Flanders Road and Wood Road Trail last night, Southampton Town Police said.

Police said officers responding at about 7:41 p.m. to a 911 call about a victim of violence at Flanders Road and Wood Road Trail found a 21-year-old male with a puncture wound from a metal object and blunt force trauma.

Flanders/Northampton Volunteer Ambulance responded and transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment, police said.

Detectives determined that the 911 caller, Francisco Hernandez-Urizar, 24, a relative of the victim, was the perpetrator, police said. The investigation revealed that the two men had gotten into a verbal altercation that escalated with Hernandez-Urizar assaulting the younger victim with a weapon.

Hernandez-Urizar was arrested and charged with Assault in the Second Degree, a class D felony, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, a class A misdemeanor. He is being held for morning arraignment at Southampton Town Justice Court.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
