Riverhead Town Police reported 134 criminal incidents and 83 arrests in February 2023, according to a monthly crime report released by Police Chief David Hegermiller this month.

Arrests made in February, according to the police chief’s report were:

Assault (1)
Criminal possession of a controlled substance (8)
Criminal possession of stolen property (6)
Criminal contempt (1)
Criminal impersonation (1)
Criminal mischief (5)
Disorderly conduct (1)
Driving while intoxicated (10)
Endangering the welfare of a child (1)
Harassment (4)
Petit larceny (8)
Robbery (2)
Sex abuse (1)
Town code violation (18)
Unlawful dealing with a child (2)
Warrant (24)

For reference, 180 criminal incidents and 130 arrests were reported in January.

“Everything is basically down or status quo, and only a few things went up, which is par for the course,” Hegermiller told the Town Board.

The Riverhead Police Department changed its method of reporting arrests to a Uniform Crime Reporting compliant system in November, which counts every single crime during an arrest and criminal incident, rather than just the most serious charge or crime during an incident, as the department’s previous method.

Due to the change, Hegermiller’s report gives numbers for both “arrests by number” and for “arrests by subject.” There were 83 individuals arrested in February compared to the 89 arrested the same month last year, according to the report.

Criminal incidents in February included aggravated harassment (1), assault (1), burglary (2), criminal contempt (1), criminal mischief (13), endangering the welfare of a child (1), fraud (3), grand larceny (18), harassment (17), identity theft (6), illegal dumping (1), petit larceny (60), robbery (2), sexual offense (1).

Out of the 83 individuals arrested in February, 35 were held for arraignment. Out of those arrested, nine were juveniles.

The town issued 1,064 summonses (including 278 parking tickets) in February. There were 2,584 non-criminal incidents in February, including three non-fatal overdoses. There were 48 town code violations issued and one town code investigation conducted in February. There were 43 domestic incidents reported in February.
