There are seven candidates running for four open seats on the Riverhead Board of Education this year.

Two of the three incumbents whose terms expire June 30 are not seeking re-election: Christopher Dorr and Therese Zuhoski did not file nominating petitions with the district clerk.

Incumbent Virginia Healy is seeking a second term as trustee.

She will be joined on the ballot by newcomers David Dougherty, Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht, Erica Murphy, Cynthia Redmond, James Scudder and Kimberly Wilder.

Candidate petitions were due at the district office by 5 p.m. yesterday.

District officials drew candidate names this morning to determine the order in which the names will appear on the ballot in next month’s election. They will appear in the following order: Kaplan-Walbrecht, Healy, Murphy, Redmond, Wilder, Dougherty and Scudder.

The three candidates who receive the most votes in the election will win a three-year term. The candidate who places fourth will fill the unexpired term of former board member Laurie Downs, which expires June 30, 2025. The candidate who fills the seat vacated by Downs last month will begin their term of office as soon as the vote is certified. The terms of the other candidates will begin July 1.

The election and budget vote will take place on Tuesday, May 16.

The school board is scheduled to finalize and adopt a proposed budget of $192,373 million at its next regular meeting tomorrow evening, according to its published agenda.

A public hearing on the proposed budget is scheduled for May 9.
