A 41-year-old Brooklyn man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow Saturday morning, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release last night.

Police said the man was a passenger in a large box truck traveling westbound on Sound Avenue near the Baiting Hollow hill when it left the roadway, struck a utility pole and a large tree, and overturned just before 10 a.m.. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.

The driver of the truck, a 31-year-old Brooklyn man, was able to exit the vehicle, according to the police report. He was taken by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. His identity was not released by police, also pending notification of next of kin.

The vehicle involved is owned and operated by a third-party delivery vendor subcontracted by P.C. Richard and Son and had been out making deliveries, police said.

The Riverhead Detective Division, Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Section and Suffolk County Crime Scene Units responded to the scene to investigate, according to the press release.

Sound Avenue was closed for the rest of the day yesterday in the area of the crash.
