Police are investigating a fire that destroyed an unoccupied home early this morning in Wading River.
The home, located at 9 Gladys Road, has been under renovation, Riverhead Police said in a press release this afternoon.
A nearby resident called police at 7:12 a.m. to report smoke coming from the home, police said. Responding patrol officers found heavy smoke coming from the roof and soffits of the single-story dwelling, according to the press release. Within a short time, the residence was fully engulfed in flames, police said.
The Riverhead Fire Marshal’s Office, Riverhead Town Police detectives and Suffolk County Police arson section detectives are investigating. A preliminary investigation suggests that the fire appears accidental in nature. However the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Riverhead Police at 631-727-4500.
Wading River Fire Department, aided by crews from the Riverhead Fire Department, Ridge Fire Department, Rocky Point Fire Department and Brookhaven National Laboratory Fire Department responded to assist in extinguishing the fire, according to the police report.
