Work underway at the railroad crossing near the intersection of Meeting House Creek Road and Edgar Avenue in 2023. RiverheadLOCAL/Peter Blasl

Due to work being done today on the railroad crossing at Meeting House Creek Road and Hubbard Avenue, the road will be closed at the crossing until about 5 p.m. today, Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said.

Edgar Avenue from Main Road to the intersection with Hubbard Avenue will remain open. Hubbard Avenue will remain open. But eastbound traffic should use alternate routes because access to Meeting House Creek Road and Peconic Bay Boulevard will not be available today. Similarly, westbound traffic on Peconic Bay Boulevard and Meeting House Creek Road will not be able to access Edgar Avenue or Hubbard Avenue.

The MTA/LIRR is doing the work and handling traffic management for this project, Zaleski said.

Zaleski has been asking the MTA/LIRR to repair degraded railroad crossings in various locations throughout Riverhead, some of which are in states of extreme disrepair, with crumbling asphalt and open craters.
