The charge against a 14-year-old Calverton boy accused of making a threat against the Riverhead Charter High School on Jan. 3 has been upgraded to a felony after further investigation by Riverhead Police detectives and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, police said in a press release Friday night.
The boy, who was not identified due to his age, was charged Friday with Making a Terroristic Threat after further investigation “gleaned additional evidence,” police said. Making a Terroristic Threat is a class D felony under New York State Penal Law.
He was originally charged with Making a Threat of Mass Harm, a class B misdemeanor, processed and released to a parent for a future court date, police said in a press release Jan. 4.
The juvenile made the threat against the school on social media, according to police. The threat was reported to police shortly before 10 p.m. on Jan. 3, police said in the press release. A search of the high school campus at 5117 Sound Avenue in Riverhead, turned up nothing suspicious or criminal, police said.
No additional details will be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation, police said.
