Updated: Jan. 14 6:45 a.m. – One lane has been reopened on eastbound Route 58 between Ostrander Avenue and Oliver Street, the Riverhead Police Department announced Saturday night. The eastbound left lane is open but the right lane remains closed for further repair, police said.
Access to the Riverhead Plaza entrance on Route 58 is available for both eastbound and westbound traffic, police said in a press release. Police urged motorists to use extra caution when driving in the area.
The eastbound lanes of Route 58 were closed to traffic in the area all day Saturday due to a partial collapse of the roadway caused by flooding after a fire hydrant was struck by a vehicle, Riverhead Police said in a press release Saturday morning.
Riverhead Police and Riverhead Water District crews responded and the water district was working to repair damage cause by the collapse, police said. The closure was expected to continue for “an extended period,” police said.
Access to the Riverhead Plaza shopping center was limited to entrances on Oliver Street and Ostrander Avenue.
Police ask anyone with information regarding the damage to the fire hydrant to call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. Ext. 312.
