Riverhead Police report the arrest of a man on felony assault, weapon possession and criminal mischief charges late last night in connection with an assault at the fishing access site near 1129 West Main Street.
Officers responded to a 911 call just after 11 p.m. Thursday night from a 44-year-old man reporting that he had been the victim of violence and needed medical assistance, according to a police press release.
Police located the man at the State DEC’s fishing access site and found that he was bleeding from his face and appeared to have several injuries to his face and head, the report said.
The man, whom police did not identify, told officers he had been hit in the face by another man who was armed with a baseball bat and had fled the area on foot prior to police arrival, police said.
A Riverhead Police K9 unit helped officers locate the suspect in a nearby wooded area, according to the report. The K9 unit also located evidence believed to have been used in the crime, police said. The suspect during the assault also caused extensive damage to the victim’s vehicle, a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander, police said.
The Lower Peconic River Fishing Access Site is in a desolate area located off a narrow, unlit driveway on the south side of West Main Street roughly across from Snowflake Ice Cream. The driveway crosses the Peconic River and leads to a LIPA substation in the Peconic Bog County Park.
According to the report, Shurvelle Rush, 47, of Riverhead, was was arrested and transported to Riverhead Police Department headquarters, where he was charged with:
One (1) count of Assault in the First Degree, P.L. section 120.10.01, a class B Felony;
One (1) count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree, P.L. section 265.02.01, a class D Felony; and
One (1) count of Criminal Mischief 3rd degree, P.L. section 145.05.02, a class E felony.
He was held for arraignment in Riverhead Town Justice Court.
The victim was treated at the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, police said. He was subsequently transferred to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Queens due to the severity of his injuries, police said.
