Riverhead Police have charged a man with a burglary that occurred at Riverhead Brew House early Sunday morning.

Police said they were notified of the burglary late Wednesday afternoon by an employee of the brewery, who reported that an unknown male had entered the premises through an improperly secured side door Sunday morning at about 5 a.m. The man removed a cash drawer containing approximately $200, police said.

Within two hours of the report, RIverhead Police detectives arrested Cecil Trent, 60, described by police as homeless, on a charge of Burglary in the Third Degree, according to a police press release issued this afternoon.

Riverhead patrol officers assisting the detective division were able to locate the cash drawer in Grangebel Park, where it was submerged in water, according to the press release.

Trent later confessed to the burglary and gave a full written confession to the investigating detectives, police said.  He was held for arraignment in Riverhead Town Justice Court.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
