The Riverhead Senior Center Due is open today and tomorrow as a warming center, due to the extreme cold weather, Riverhead Town Supervisor Tim Hubbard said.

Daytime high temperatures in the local area will not climb above the low 20s on both days, according to the National Weather Service. Brisk winds will make it feel even colder, with wind chill values tomorrow morning as low as 3º below zero the weather service said in its forecast.

The Riverhead Senior Center will be open as a warming center between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. both days, the supervisor said. The center is located at 60 Shade Tree Lane in Riverhead.

If you can, stay inside overnight tonight, the supervisor said in the advisory. Anyone who must go outside, should be prepared for the cold by dressing in layers and wearing a hat and gloves, the advisory said. Make sure that all areas of exposed skin are protected. Frostbite can occur in a short period of time.

Dan O’Shea, who runs Maureen’s Haven Homeless Outreach in Riverhead said anyone without shelter in the extreme cold should call the Suffolk County Department of Social Services. If it is below 32 ºF, the county is required by law to provide shelter, he said.

The Suffolk DSS temporary housing unit can be reached at (631) 854-9547 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The weekend/evening/emergency number for the temporary housing unit is (631) 854-9100.

People in need can always call Maureen’s Haven at (631) 727-6831, O’Shea said. Maureen’s Haven coordinates with churches on the East End that provide overnight shelter to unhoused persons.

People in need of shelter can also call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
