An air quality health advisory for ground-level ozone will be in effect across Long Island from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The advisory includes Suffolk and Nassau counties, along with New York City, Westchester and Rockland counties, the National Weather Service in Upton said in an alert issued late Monday.

Air quality levels in outdoor air are forecast to exceed an Air Quality Index value of 100 for ground-level ozone. The AQI is a scale used to communicate how polluted the air is and the associated health concern; higher values indicate greater concern.

The AQI for the Long Island region is forecast to reach 112 today.

State health officials recommend that people consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity when pollution levels are elevated. Those most sensitive to higher ozone levels include young children and people with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Anyone experiencing symptoms should consider consulting a personal physician.

Forecasters said a hot air mass will be in place Tuesday, with sunny skies expected locally and a high near 85 degrees in Riverhead. The National Weather Service forecast discussion noted the region will be warming into midweek, conditions that can contribute to higher ozone levels.
