An air quality health advisory for ground-level ozone will be in effect Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. across Long Island and the New York City metro area, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The advisory includes Suffolk and Nassau counties, as well as New York City, Westchester and Rockland counties.

Air quality levels in outdoor air are expected to be greater than an air quality index value of 100 for ground-level ozone, the DEC said. The AQI is a scale used to compare levels of different pollutants; higher values indicate a greater health concern.

State health officials recommend limiting strenuous outdoor activity when pollution levels are elevated, especially for people who are more sensitive to air pollution, including young children and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Anyone experiencing symptoms should consider consulting a physician.

The advisory comes as hot weather builds into Friday, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 91 degrees in Riverhead, according to the National Weather Service.
