To The Editor:
The opening of the Obama Presidential Center yesterday provides a stark contrast to different forms that leadership can take.
Contrasting President Obama with President Trump is an eye opener and clearly marks out the different paths we can take as the people of this great nation.
President Obama expressed hope and courage in his remarks —hope that we the people realize we have the power to direct the course of this nation and courage to make a choice on which path to take, rejecting one based on fear, hatred of others, distrust of our neighbors. And the crazy notion that some people – white wealthy men – are better than everybody else.
The people under the sway of Trump believe that we Democrats are the enemy, that we hate this country just because we see things differently and we vehemently disagree with the path he is taking us down based on division and anger and cruelty and down right meanness. Not to mention the theft of our taxpayer dollars and the destruction of public property.
We can forge a path that is based on values of fairness, inclusion of all, and respect for the diversity of others no matter the color of their skin, the size of their bank account or their religious beliefs.
We can right the ship and shore up respect for the rule of law and stop the craziness, but we need to start at home with our own families, neighbors and friends. We have to get involved, even if your involvement is just going out to vote. Because elections matter and they do set the course for the nation, the state, the county and every town or village like ours here on the North Fork.
Get involved in your local community. Contribute to organizations that support a cause near to your heart. Yes, everyone is super busy but getting involved pays huge dividends that show you that you can make a difference.
