An air quality health advisory for ground-level ozone has been issued for Long Island and the New York City metro area on Tuesday, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The advisory covers Nassau and Suffolk counties, including the East End, and is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday. Air quality levels in outdoor air are forecast to exceed an Air Quality Index value of 100 for ground-level ozone, the department said.

When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive include young children and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Anyone experiencing symptoms should consider consulting a physician, state health officials said.

The advisory comes as hot and humid conditions build into the region. The National Weather Service forecast for Riverhead calls for sunny skies Tuesday with a high near 88 and southwest winds 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Heat is expected to intensify Wednesday, with a high near 93 and a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms late in the day.
