Francisca J. (Paquita) Montenegro of Southold died Sept. 21, 2026. She was 99 years old.
Born Aug. 16, 1927, in Havana, Cuba, she was the daughter of Francisca (Aranda) and Jose Garcia and was an only child. She attended American Dominican Academy in Havana and later the Institute of Vedado, Havana Business Secretarial School.
While in Cuba, she worked as an accountant for Salas, Gutierrez and Gamoneda.
In 1961, she immigrated to South America, living in Chile, Peru, Panama and Argentina, before leaving in 1972 and moving to the United States. She lived in Fresh Meadows, Queens; Ringwood and Fairlawn, New Jersey; and Hollywood and Miami, Florida, before moving to Southold three years ago.
On Dec. 13, 1952, at Parroquia del Vedado Church in Cuba, she married Jose Montenegro, and together they had three sons.
She was predeceased by her husband. She is survived by her sons, Joseph Montenegro (Donna) of Metairie, Louisiana, George Montenegro of Labelle, Florida, and Julio Montenegro (Barbara) of Southold; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at a future date in Miami, Florida. Arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.
