Nor’easter

The nor’easter in today’s forecast has been slower than expected to arrive, but it’s still coming and is still expected to drop up to a foot of heavy, wet snow in the Riverhead area, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm has the potential for one of the biggest March snowfalls on Long Island since 1967, when a 15 inches of snow was recorded in Islip on March 22, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm dropped five to six inches of snow in and around Riverhead, while eastern parts of the South Fork saw accumulations of more than a foot, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

Heavy snow will fall today on the East End as a pair of coastal low pressure systems track southeast of Montauk Point, according to the National Weather Service.

Total snow accumulations of six to 10 inches are expected across the East End, with localized amounts up to 12 inches possible.

Heavy rain and storm surge caused coastal flooding, while high tides and strong winds battered the Long Island Sound coastline yesterday.

Tides will be two to three feet above astronomical tides today and tonight, causing widespread moderate coastal flooding during the times of high tide today and tonight.

Residents in flood-prone areas should pay close attention and motorists should allow extra time, reduce speeds and avoid standing water, Riverhead Town Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith said in a weather statement and travel advisory.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning and flood watches for our area ahead of a storm expected to bring tropical storm force winds with gusts up to 70 mph and heavy rains to our area.
