(Updated: 3:20 p.m.) Numerous roads in coastal areas are flooding as the afternoon high tide comes in.
Areas along the Peconic Riverfront had several inches — as much as a foot — of water on the pavement at 1:30, according to police.
High tide in Riverhead is 1:46 p.m.; in South Jamesport it is 2:32 p.m..
Peconic Avenue became inundated about an hour after hight tide, prompting Riverhead Police to close the road, setting up barricades at Peconic Avenue and East Main Street.
Meeting House Creek Road is closed and portions of Peconic Bay Boulevard in Laurel and Jamesport are closed due to flooding. Town Beach Road in South Jamesport is impassable.
The Riverhead BID has canceled pumpkin-carving in the carriage house on the grounds of the East End Arts Council this afternoon.
“Downtown is basically under water,” Riverhead BID executive director Diane Tucci said. The flooding has nearly reached the carriage house, she said.
Since pumpkin-carving is canceled, there will be no jack-o-lantern walk tomorrow as hoped. There will still be a pumpkin decorating contest with the results announced after the Halloween parade tomorrow evening. Tucci said she will provide an update on where and when to drop off decorated and carved pumpkins.
The parade will go on at 7 p.m. Sunday.
