Chip Williford, the director and co-host of the Riverhead-based Poetry Street, has been named Suffolk County Poet Laureate — the first African American ever named to the post in Suffolk.

Poetry Street, the Riverhead-based group that grew out of the East End Arts JumpstART program, celebrated its 10th anniversary last Saturday at Riverhead Free Library.

The founders and hosts of Poetry Street reflect on its beginnings, the community that grew up around it, and their hope for its future, as the Riverhead-based group celebrates its 10th birthday.

Poetry Street, the Riverhead-based open-mic venue for poetry and the spoken word, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary at Riverhead Free Library on Saturday, June 29, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Riverhead-based, open-mic venue for poetry and the spoken word, founded in 2014 by Susan Dingle of Cutchogue and Robert “Bubbie” Brown of Riverhead, has turned to Zoom for its monthly events. The next event a "Founders Day" celebration takes place today from 4 to 6 p.m.

The popular five-year-old, open-mic venue for poetry readings will take up residence at Sunny’s Riverhead Diner and Grill on East Main Street beginning July 28.
