Get out of the office, the house, or your car and enjoy lunch on the riverfront along with some live music and a display of photographs of Riverhead of the past at 'Lunch on the Riverfront.'

The final production of 'Riverhead Idol' takes place tomorrow, May 22. Next year, the popular vocal showcase will give way to a 'Riverhead's Got Talent' competition, in which singing and other talents will be showcased.

Years of neglect and lack of maintenance left Riverhead Skate Park in such a state of disrepair that last spring, town officials decided it was no longer safe to use.

The town continues to charge beach fees higher than allowed by town code. Instead of trying — again — to raise them by changing the code, the town is trying a different approach: taking them out of the code altogether.

Pickleball, a sport hugely popular with seniors across the country, has flourished in Riverhead, where town recreation department programs have an avid following, competitive play and the first-of-its-kind tournament on Long Island.

Riverhead’s senior citizen and recreation departments will be combined into one in a move that will increase programming and save the town about $1 million over the next five years, if a plan put together by the two department heads is approved by the town board.

"Every year it just got worse and worse," said Ray Coyne, director of the town's recreation department. The park was shut down at the beginning of the year, and it's still awaiting repair.

Riverhead Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ray Coyne says Stotzky Park and other facilities are in dire need of repair, but there's no money to do all that's needed.

Registration is on a first come, first serve basis and is open to residents and non-residents.
