September 11

Here we are again, some 19 years later, and our lives were paused once again as an unseen enemy brought death to our communities, our neighbors and even to our family members’ doors. But our nation’s response has changed. Instead of a nation united in searching for a cure against an enemy virus; we are divided in political camps and words and actions filled with hate.

In a brief but well-attended service, the Reeves Park community marked the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack tonight.

Riverhead Town officials joined in prayer and reflection for a wreath-laying ceremony at the World Trade Center Memorial in Calverton this morning.

September 11, 2001: A remembrance

The Reeves Park community, which lost two residents, both NYC firefighters who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, hosted its 10th annual candlelight walk and remembrance service last night.

“I thought that people needed a place to come to, where they could sit and reflect, meditate or pray,” Calverton resident Hal Lindstrom said this morning at the memorial park he conceived 18 years ago. “I knew I had to do this."

Those of us who experienced the events of that day as they unfolded — even from a great distance — will never forget them. We have a solemn responsibility to make sure that the new "day of infamy" and people who perished in those attacks are not forgotten.

The Sound Park Heights Civic Association will host its annual candlelight walk and remembrance service Wednesday evening at the 9/11 Memorial Park on Sound Avenue.

“It’s always an emotional day, always very tough," said Bob Kelly of Reeves Park, retired NYC firefighter whose younger brother, also a city firefighter, was killed in the collapse of the South Tower.
