(Updated: March 3) Riverhead Police identified the man injured in a construction site accident as Jason Nichols, 42, of Coram.  Police said Nichols succumbed to his injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was airlifted after the March 1 accident.

Riverhead Police are seeking witnesses to an industrial accident that seriously injured a worker at a Route 58 construction site this morning.

Police said a 42-year-old man operating a bulldozer on land to the rear of Riverhead Nissan fell from and was hit by the machine. The unmanned bulldozer continued operating westbound, traveling across the property and striking a parked, unoccupied van before coming to a stop in the rear parking lot of Applebee’s restaurant.

The man, whom police did not identify, had been working to level the site, which had been cleared for an expansion at the dealership. He was lying injured on the ground when police arrived at the scene at about 10:20 this morning, according to a police report. He sustained what police said appeared to be serious internal injuries in the accident.

No one else was injured in the incident, police said.

OSHA was notified and responded to conduct its own investigation, according to the report.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
